About Dota 2 ping

Measure your Dota 2 ping to every matchmaking region from the browser. Dota 2 connects through Valve's Steam Datagram Relay, and the region you queue in sets your latency floor for last-hits, blinks, and reaction-window spells. This tool probes a server near each Dota 2 region and ranks them by round-trip time.

Dota 2 ping guide: excellent under 50 ms · good under 90 ms · playable under 120 ms · rough past 200 ms.

Methodology

How this maps to in-game Dota 2 ping

Dota 2 connects through Valve's Steam Datagram Relay, one matchmaking region at a time. This test probes the nearest point of presence for each Dota region over HTTPS and ranks by measured latency. In-client Dota ping (on the scoreboard) sits slightly below browser RTT because it uses UDP — trust the ordering of regions to decide which ones to enable in your matchmaking search.

FAQ

Dota 2 ping — frequently asked

What is a good ping for Dota 2?
Under 50 ms is excellent and under 90 ms is good. Dota 2 remains playable up to about 120 ms, and tolerable to ~200 ms, though last-hitting and reactive spells get harder as latency climbs.
Why does in-game Dota ping differ from this test?
Dota traffic is UDP via Valve SDR, which browsers can't send directly. This test uses HTTPS probes to the nearest cloud region as a proxy — add roughly 5–15 ms for the TCP/TLS overhead, but the order of regions matches what you'll see in-client.
How do I pick the right Dota 2 region?
Queue in the region with the lowest measured ping that still has a healthy player pool for your MMR. The table lists the nearest Valve PoP per region so you can verify the route.
Can I lower my Dota 2 ping?
Use a wired connection, close uploads/streams, and select the lowest-latency region. A VPN only helps in the rare case it gives a shorter physical route to your nearest Valve PoP.

How this maps to in-game ping

Real game traffic is UDP; browsers can't open raw sockets. We probe AWS S3 regional endpoints (anycast-free HTTPS) and map each Valve SDR PoP to its nearest AWS region by great-circle distance. Expect ~5–15 ms TCP+TLS overhead vs in-game UDP, but the relative ordering of regions tracks closely.

Confidence: medium-high

Strong for relative ranking and choosing a region. Absolute numbers carry HTTPS overhead. Coverage is sparse in some places (mainland CN, parts of RU/ME) — those regions show rather than a misleading number.
